The 'House in Kustosija' is created from an old single-storey house on a complex location with problematic neighbours, a backyard squeezed in between the neighbouring houses and with what used to be a locksmith’s shop. Not a very promising context!

The old house needed to be reconstructed for the grandmother and the older generation, the attic needed to be adapted into a pleasant flat for the youngest generation and the former workshop in the backyard should be replaced by a new dwelling for the parents.

The tree
The house is located without an attractive view, without a garden, without a landscape in the distance – but a space for an olive tree was found. A permanent visual delight. The tree has its own movable roof to protect it from the frost during the winter and provide it with a fragment of sky to yield summer warmth.
Space and function
The new inserted volume is firmly embracing the old house, reaching to the boundaries of the plot, while transparency and fluidity are underlined by spacious living areas.
On the ground floor of the new part, there is an open view from one end to the other, and the residential area, with luminous zenithal light, opens the space to guests or friends of the family in an infinite sequence.
The attic apartment is designed with the same spatial logic. The private rooms are placed in "boxes" - bathroom, bedrooms and closets, while everything else is a continuous sequence of zones where the functions are divided by levels: work – kitchen/dining – living room.
History and construction
A light steel construction has replaced the similar, older one that held the roof of the workshop. Well thought-out and carefully designed details preserve the memory of the former workplace. The white-painted bricks, the double layer of Lexan over the living room in the ground floor, the perforated tin sheets in the interior and exterior, the industrial floorboards... – they are all part of the same process, the same tactics of memorizing the old.
Finally, the old house is shining after the renovation and the perfect mask on the facades is protecting the interior from curious eyes.
